Abstract

Dental caries is still a common health problem in Indonesia. According to the results of Basic Health Research by the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia, in 2018, 57.6% of Indonesia's population experienced dental and oral health problems. Early detection of carious lesions will greatly affect caries prevention so that it does not require operative treatment. Early caries lesions are still reversible and have the potential to remineralized so that the teeth can regain their strength. However, when caries continues, a cavity will form which will weaken the tooth. The lost tooth structure cannot be restored and thus requires inexpensive operative care. Mother is the main figure who plays an important role in the family. Mothers play an important role in meeting the needs of all family members, including in maintaining the health of family members. The Harapan Mulia RPTRA is an RPTRA located in Kemayoran. Based on the information obtained, there are many cases of cavities in children. This community service activity aims to increase awareness and knowledge of mothers about the detection of dental caries. The method used is to provide counseling and training in the detection of dental caries. The result of this activity is that the highest knowledge possessed by mothers is regarding the color of healthy teeth and the surface shape of the diseased teeth (100%). Also good knowledge (85.7%) is regarding the surface shape of healthy teeth, treatment of teeth with early signs of caries, and treatment of cavities. The knowledge that is quite good is about how to see the signs of cavities, which is 57.1, while the knowledge that is considered insufficient (42.9%) is about the color of decyed teeth, how to see the early signs of caries. Increased knowledge and skills of mothers in detecting caries are expected to increase awareness of the importance of maintaining oral health and early caries detection.
